I know they have a huge following, they're fun to drive, blah blah blah, but bottom line is, they suck. My DD Wrangler was extremely unreliable, primitive and overpriced. Sunk a LOT of money into it and got little to no returns. Deep-Purple: My new DD, a '99 VW Passat, is perfect for me. Mechainically, it's an Audi A4, but with a lower price tag. It's quiet, gets good gas mileage, and is nice enough to enjoy but not nice enough to worry about. Even in FWD form, it's GREAT in snow (actually better in shallow snow than my Wrangler w/BF Goodrich All Terrain T/A's), and they're available in AWD. Outside looks good, doesn't attract unwanted attention; interior is GREAT (IMO), very simple. The interior lights even come red STOCK, like everyone is trying to get their Z's :) Being a 1.8T, it also has a pretty decent following/aftermarket parts selection and quite a bit of potential, in case I ever feel the need. It's actually a pretty neat little engine, 1.8L turbo 4cyl w/5 valves/cylinder.
Bought it for $8k from a dealership, 60k miles, immaculate condition, certified pre-owned, two year bumper to bumper warranty. 
Highly recommended, if you're looking for something a bit more on the practical side.
